MW Golf Team Classic 2006 Grand Finals      16 July - 22 July 2006
Fantastic scenery and wonderful weather met the winning teams from the National Final held on 8 June 2006.   The teams (2 ladies teams, one from Tewkesbury Park and one from Sapey, including 3 mens teams from Sittingbourne, Meon Valley and Henley Golf Clubs) played at the beautiful Schwarzsee course and stayed in the immaculate and pretty Rasmushof Hotel in Kitzbuhel, Austria. The area is stunning with the backdrop of The Alps always somewhere to be seen.
The exquisite Rasmushof Hotel has its own 9 hole par 3 course which is no push-over.   Drivers needed from some tees. The course is laid out on the hillside which becomes the famous World downhill skiing course in the winter. You can putt in the finish area of the legendary Hahnenkamm ski race!
With panoramic views of the Astberg, Rauher Kopf and Wilder Kaiser peaks, the Schwarzsee golf course has a lot to offer.

Surrounded by mountains, forests and meadows the course has water obstacles, flat fairways 1 - 9 and hilly profiles of holes 10 - 18.

Fun was had at the Tyrolean evening.

Annette and April found some more fun paragliding down from the mountain to the hotel giving the spectators at the pool a wave!

The mens teams from Sittingbourne, Kent (the eventual grand winners) and the runners up from Meon Valley and Henley Golf Clubs.

I'm not sure who the lady gatecrasher is!!   Probably "Netty" from Sapey GC........(the eventual ladies winners of the tournament).
Glo Slatter, Michelle Frain, Sally Morgan and moi (Christine Williams) posing against the backdrop of those magnificent mountains.   Can you blame us?!!!

The air was so clean and fresh you wished you could bottle it.
The town of Kitzbuhel is a stroll away from the hotel.  Great shops!

Another golf course is shown on the right.
The ladies teams, from left, April Whetton, Michelle Frain, Tina Wooldridge, Annette Kirk, Glo Slatter, Sally Morgan, Pat Watkins and Christine Williams, celebrate at the end of the week.   Everyone agreed that it had been a fantastic experience and our thanks go to Carole Couchman and John Gale who accompanied us and organised it so successfully.

NSPCC Ladies' Golf Classic - Grand Final 2005
The Grand Final of the NSPCC Ladies Golf Classic took place on an overcast, but warm day at the stunning Forest of Arden.

Ladies from across the UK came to the venue of the British Masters representing their region, having qualified through their own clubs and then the Regional Finals.
I was kindly invited, together with Mandy, to play on the last day as guests and we accompanied the last two competitors, Lorraine and Janice (pictured in the middle), little knowing then that they were to become the eventual winners!
Barry, one of the organisers from www.teamfrith.com had the camera turned on him - but he seems to be enjoying himself!
Lorraine and Janice who had travelled all the way from Lisburn Golf Club in Northern Ireland didn't appear to be aware of the large stretch of water on this hole and came away with a Par.
You never know who is watching you in the Forest of Arden!

This beautiful course runs through a Deer park on the back nine holes. What with the deer, water and fauna it is most difficult to focus on keeping your ball in play.
As you would expect, the Final was fiercely and closely contested, with three of the first four pairs in the clubhouse scoring 36 points.

Then, with only one more group to come in, Kathleen Henderson and Jan Mackie from Moor Allerton Golf Club came in with a fantastic 38 points.

It looked as though they would be taking the title, but with a 2 pointer on the tricky 18th, it was the ladies, Lorraine McAleese and Janice Orr who had travelled all the way from Lisburn in Northern Ireland who took the title with a score of 39.

Third place went to a count back, with Ann Elliott and Tracy Bazell of Dorset Golf Club just pipping Sue Harvey and Cathy Wheatley of Forest Pines.

Fifth place went to Hilary Smyth and Joan Caw of Pannal Golf Club with Margaret Maisey and Holly Small from Ellesborough Golf Club in sixth place.

Beverly Waspe and Nicola Stevenson (Stowmarket Golf Club), Irene Mitchell, Sue Mortimer (Wycombe Heights Golf Club) and Linda Beasley, Camille Tooze (Hawkhurst Golf Club) all tied for 7th place.
The prizes were presented at the Grand Final in the evening by Janet from the NSPCC, held in Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel. After the prize giving, the winners, Lorraine McAleese and Janice Orr, thanked the Forest of Arden for the hospitality, all of the ladies for their enjoyable company over the past couple of days, Team Frith for their organisation and hoped that the money raised would go towards helping the NSPCC in their aim to end cruelty to children.

For information on how your club can take part next year, (2006) email Louise Brown, pictured here, of Team Frith or visit their website www.teamfrith.com for more details.

The Daily Mail Foursomes Competition 2004
EVEN A CHAMPION LIKE VIVIEN CAN FALL AT THE FIRST HURDLE
A lifetime of golfing achievement, it would seem, is no guarantee of success in the Daily Mail Foursomes.
Just ask Vivien Saunders. The former women's British Open champion and England national coach, who was awarded the OBE for services to the sport in 1998, fell at her first hurdle in last year's event - one of her first back in the amateur ranks.
Vivien and Julia Sales, a two-time foursomes finalist, from Cambridge Meridian, were beaten 3&2 Moat House's Izzy Dear and Grace Eastment in the second round after receiving a bye through the first phase.
Vivien Saunders
Vivien, now in her fifties but still playing off plus two, said: 'We actually scored very well. I think we were one under par standing on the 12th tee, but we were still two down. That is what sometimes happens in handicap events.' But Vivien said: 'We will be back entering next year. It is such a nice tournament.'

Tewkesbury Park Competitions

The Golf Section at Tewkesbury Park Hotel and Country Club have a very busy diary with a considerable amount of Honours Board, Mixed and Fun competitions being held throughout the year.

Some Honours Board competitions, such as The Club Championship and Ladies Open have to be held on determined tees on the main competition day which is a Wednesday but others can be played on the alternative day for the Business Ladies which for our club, is the previous Sunday.   Quite often some of the Business Ladies who have had a good round on the Sunday can be seen doing a Rain Dance for the heavens to open on the following Wednesday!

Qualifying Competitions:
Mail on Sunday
National knockout competition with matches played against local golf clubs in the initial rounds.   Team of 4 playing difference of 3/4 handicap matchplay.   In the event of a tie, the last players have a "sudden death" playoff to decide the overall winner to go through to the next round.
County Foursomes Competition
The pairs winner of the club's knockout rounds go through to following rounds.   The eventual winners qualifying for the Grand Final.
Watson Williams Trophy
Scratch knockout competition.
Douglas Bader Qualifying Competition (mixed)

The winners of Golf Club's qualifying round go through to the finals.

"Fun" Competitions:
Title
Description
Magic Multiplier Pairs competition.  Each hole played as stableford and multiply your score with your partner's.  For example, if you score 2 points on the first hole and your partner scores 4, your total points for that hole would be 8!   If however one of you scores 4 but the other has a blob and scores 0, then 4 x 0 = Nothing.
3 Clubs and a putter Players choose which 3 clubs to use - played as stableford
Yellow Ball Teams of 3 - full handicap stableford.   Each player in turn plays a hole with the "yellow ball".   Two scores to count on each hole:  the "yellow ball", plus the better score of the other two players.   Total the scores.
Bowmaker Teams of 3 - full handicap stableford.   Holes 1 - 6, the best stableford score out of 3 team members, on each hole to count.  Holes 7 - 12, the best two stableford scores of 3 team members to count.   Holes 13 - 18, all three stableford scores of team members to count.   Total up scores for holes 1 - 18 for team score.
Texas Scramble Teams of 3 or 4.   All drive, best ball is selected and marked.   All players either place (on fairway) or drop at that point and all play from there.   Record the gross score for each hole.   Total up the gross scores, subtract 10% of your total players' handicaps from the total gross score to give your net score.   Each player must contribute 4 tee shots to the team effort.
Bisque Bogey Stableford off full handicap.   Players can use as many shots as they want but not to exceed your maximum allowance over the 18 holes.   For example, if your handicap is 20 you may decide to take 3 of these on the 1st which you personally consider to be a difficult hole but none on the 7th which you find easy to par!   You then continue until you have reached your handicap allowance, selecting and announcing before you tee off how many shots you wish to take before playing that hole.
All Irons Stableford Only irons and a putter are allowed - full stableford allowance.
Am Am Usually teams of 4 with the best 2 stableford scores on each hole to count.
Stableford The Golf Stableford points Scoring System (named after Dr Frank Stableford at the Glamorganshire Club, Penarth in 1898 when the first Stableford competition was held there on 30 September 1898.)

The Stableford system allocates a point's score for each hole that the player completes. At the completion of the round the player adds up all the scores for each hole and that becomes their score for the round.

The points allocated are as follows against your nett score:
Net Double-bogey (2-over par) = 0 points
Net Bogey (1-over par) = 1 point
Net Par = 2 points
Net Birdie (1-under par) = 3 points
Net Eagle (2-under par) = 4 points
Net Albatross (3-under par) = 5 points

However, you must also take your handicap into account in determining the nett par, Birdie, Bogey etc. For instance if you have a handicap of 18 you are allowed one extra shot on each hole to achieve par or bogey or birdie etc. If your handicap is 36 you are allowed 2 extra shots to achieve par etc. If your handicap lies between 18 and 36, say 24, you are allowed one extra shot on each hole and a further extra shot (two in all) on the six most difficult holes to achieve par etc.

Holes are indexed on the scorecard according to their relative level of difficulty. The most difficult hole is classed as Index 1 and the least difficult as Index 18.

If there is a tie when all the scores are totted up and the cards compared it is normal to attempt to separate tied scores on a ‘count-back’. This is where the score for the last 9 holes are compared and the highest one is declared the winner. If the score for the last nine is equal the last six are compared – if the scores are still tied then the last three and finally the score on the final hole is used to determine the winner.
